Remembering August 11 & 12

August 11 & 12 — Recovery & Response

One Year Later

What happened on Grounds and in Charlottesville last year on August 11 and 12 served as a stark reminder that the histories of slavery, anti-Semitism, and nativism have not been left in the past—they remain a problematic part of our present.

At the time of this writing, the one-year anniversary of that hate-filled weekend is only a few weeks away, and we have been reflecting on how the College has responded—and will continue to respond—to the venom and violence on display last summer. Here is a summary of the public initiatives introduced and statements shared by members of the Arts & Sciences community.
